Notes:
A wonderful Norman almshouse 'hospital' established
by Bishop Lanfranc of Pavia in around 1085. It is said to be the
oldest almshouse or 'Hospital' in England, though apparently some
upstarts in Winchester claim one almost as old.
It has six small houses for old people to live in
at reduced rent, surrounding a green, with the chapel at one side,
and is a beautiful and quiet place.
