Norman Hospital or Almshouse - the oldest in England, dating from
around 1085, though much of it (as the doorway below) is 15th/16th century and later.
St John Baptist
Notes:

A wonderful Norman almshouse 'hospital' established by Bishop Lanfranc of Pavia in around 1085. It is said to be the oldest almshouse or 'Hospital' in England, though apparently some upstarts in Winchester claim one almost as old.

It has six small houses for old people to live in at reduced rent, surrounding a green, with the chapel at one side, and is a beautiful and quiet place.

See details on next page, Saint John Baptist Hospital - details, and in the informative booklet available in the chapel, writen by the Rev. Derek Hill. See the bibliography.
